The St. Lucie Waterfront Council sponsored a bus tour of the Inthan River Lagoon scenic area on June 23rd. to showcase this area to the Board of Directors for a Scenic Arnerica, the state chapter of the national organization, Scenic America. Mary Houser from the Scenic America office in Washington, D.C. also joined the group. T'hey were in Fort Pierce for the annual Board of Directors meeting.
Scenic Florida has chosen this area for their directors meeting becuase of Scenic Americ designating this area as one of the twelve "Last Chance Landscapes" in the nation. The St. Lucie Waterfront Council is a group of local citizens devoted to saving the Indian River Lagoon from destruction by harmful development such as the threat of any increased cargo port operations at the Port of Fort Pierce. The Indian River Lagoon was designated as the Most Diverse Estuary in North America and the The St. Lucie Waterfront Council is determined to protect the lagoon as well as our beautiful renovated historic downtown Fort Pierce.
The scenic beauty of the area, so often taken for granted by local residents was also highlighted as well as many notable tourist attrations and restored historical sites.
Prior to the bus tour the group was taken on a river cruise from Harbor Branch Ocenaographic institution, which was followed by a walking tour of Historic Downtown and a progressive dinner at some of the fine downtown restaurants. The walking tour and progressive dinner were under the direction of Main Street.
