History of the St. Lucie Waterfront Council

The Waterfront Council formed in July 1996, after a planning charette was held on the development of the Port of Fort Pierce.  Many citizens gave of their time that weekend only to find that the charette results were manipulated into a different plan other than what the citizen groups presented. The St. Lucie Waterfront Council has continued to fight to save the Port area and not increase the cargo development. If you will recall, a straw ballot was held in March of 1995; those results have basically been ignored by pro cargo proponents. Only 4% of the vote was for cargo.

The St. Lucie Waterfront Council has spent endless hours at commission meetings, writing letters, researching important issues, making trips to visit our State officials with a determined effort to make sure the desires of the residents of St. Lucie County are met.  We have seen tremendous pressure applied by our government to have a full blown cargo port in St. Lucie County. Cargo will create only a few jobs compared to the many jobs tourist related   development will bring to our port area. We do not want any more nightmare projects like the famous silos that were to "bring jobs" (touted as 17 jobs, actually brought two and now 0). We are tired of being led down a primrose path with the excuse of creating jobs.
